Dr. CHAN Kap Luk, former Associate Professor at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU), gave a lecture entitled “Image Aesthetics: The Artist Perspective and What Engineers Can Do”on May11, at the auditorium of the Graduate School(GS), as the keynote lecture of the 129thHUADA Forum.
Dr. CHAN introduced his study on using technologies such as pattern recognition, machine learning, and image processing to understand the aesthetic patterns and rules from a painter’s perspective. He presented motivation and objectives, previous research, methods, statistics and experimental results of the study mainly from four parts: Atmospheric Perspective Effect Enhancement of Landscape Photographs, Figure-Ground Contrast Enhancement for Portrait Photograph, Vignette Effect Manipulation, and Composition Improvement of Portrait. The lecture brought general understanding of the underlying attributes of the visual appeal of paintings to the audiences, and broadened their version towards algorithms to transfer those attributes to acquire and generate digital photographs.
Dr. CHAN is currently the Managing Director and Director of Technology of Tolendata Singapore R&D Centre Private Limited, and the Director of Technology, Stratech Systems Ltd, Singapore. He is also a visiting chair professor of Anhui University, China. He has published more than 180 refereed journal and conference papers, and won the Research Award of Nanyang Technological Universitytwice. He served as reviewers for several IEEE Transactions, and other journals. Besides, he has also served as a steering committee member, general chair, program chair, special session organizer, organizing committee member and program committee member in a number of international conferences.
The lecture, presided over by Mr. WU Helin, the Deputy Dean of Central China Normal University Wollongong Joint Institute (JI), was organized by the JI and sponsored by the Graduate School of CCNU.
